Justin Verlander, RHP, starter
Verlander keeps it simple. He has a dominant 4-seam fastball that sits in the mid-90s. He can get some movement on a 2-seamer in the low-90s as well. His curveball bites hard, and he can vary the velocity on it. So far in 2008, Verlander seems to be more confident in his changeup, a sinking pitch that he has gained much more command of as a pro. 4/7/08 CSJ

Kenny Rogers, LHP, starter
Kenny Rogers is over 40 and he's fired up about it. The Gambler is still slinging it somehow, although without as much velocity as he had as a youngster. He throws two distinct fastballs, and actually receives two different signs for them. He'll throw a 4-seamer in the upper-80s and a sinking 2-seamer in the low-80s. Rogers deals a big curveball and a soft changeup. Lastly, Kenny has a tight slider that he'll work to his glove side of the plate. 5/1/08 CSJ

Francisco Cruceta, RHP, reliever
Cruceta is a hard thrower. He has a low-mid 90s fastball that flies fairly straight. His second pitch is a splitter that dives hard under bats. I have yet to see a breaking ball from Cruceta in 2008. 5/2/08 CSJ

*fastball(90-94), splitter(79-83), curve(81)

Todd Jones, RHP, closer
Jones has found his niche as a cutter throwing closer, although his grasp on a closer's job is always questionable. He brings lots of cutters to LHs, curveballs, and 2-seam fastballs. He throws a changeup as his fourth pitch. Jones has added more and more movement to his fastball as his velocity has slowly diminished throughout his career. 4/7/08 CSJ

Aquilino Lopez, RHP, reliever
Lopez throws a cutting fastball around 90mph. He relies on his slurve though, a pitch that sweeps across the zone around 80mph. Aqui's offspeed pitch is a splitter, usually thrown only to LHs. 4/7/08 CSJ

Zach Miner, RHP, reliever
Miner has an excellent changeup, and will use it like most pitchers use their breaking ball. He'll throw it as his strikeout pitch to both LH and RH hitters. The pitch gets good sink and tail with good deception. Miner will use his fastball to get ahead. Miner has shown a slider and curveball at times. 5/2/08 CSJ

*fastball(88-92), changeup(79-82), slider(83), curve

Clay Rapada, LHP, reliever
Rapada is all about deception. He has a strange, jerking delivery, and zips the ball up to the plate from a very low 3/4. His fastball sinks and his slider sweeps. Rapada looks like he could be deadly for LHs. 5/3/08 CSJ

Nate Robertson, LHP, starter
Depending on the outing, Robertson has the potential to bring 94mph heat. He throws tons of fastballs, and goes inside with it often. His control can be suspect, but he can still pile up innings. Robertson twists a hard slider, throwing it almost exclusively to his glove side of the plate. Nate and his rec-specs also have a hard changeup that he'll throw away from RHs. In the past, he has tried some split-finger pitches. 5/2/08 CSJ

Bobby Seay, LHP, reliever
Seay throws from a 3/4 arm angle, making it tough for LH hitters. He has a sweeping slider and a 90mph fastball. In the past he has shown a changeup, and may use it occasionally when facing RHs. 5/11/08 CSJ

*fastball(87-93), slider(77-81), changeup

Jeremy Bonderman, RHP, starter
The Bondo Show has a simple repertoire. He relies on his heavy, moving fastball and his big breaking slider. He has lost about 4-5mph of velocity since 2007, and has suffered because of it. His slider still breaks a ton, but hitters have an easier time laying off. Every year he claims he is working on his changeup, and he probably is, but he has never been able to comfortably throw it. He'll usually try it early in games, and then scrap it as soon as it sails on him a couple times. Bondo Show gets his nickname from his childish antics that include giving a fake 'flip of the bird' to a television camera and blowing off his old manager, Alan Trammell. 5/11/08 CSJ

*fastball(88-91), slider(79-83), changeup(82-84)

Kyle Farnsworth, RHP, reliever
Farnsworth is a fastball/slider reliever. He has great velocity, awful command, and a nasty slider. I have not seen an off-speed pitch from Farnsworth in years. However, in 2008, 'The Farns' is throwing a noticeable 2-seam sinker about 5mph slower than his 4-seamer, something he says he used to do when he was a starting pitcher. 5/9/08 CSJ

*4-seam fastball(93-98), 2-seam fastball(89-91), slider(83-91)
