Jake Peavy, RHP, starter
|
| |
Peavy is known for his excellent slider nowadays, and he throws many of them. He'll vary the pitch anywhere in the 80-89mph range, varying the tilt as well. His fastball is hard and gets good tailing action, boring in on RHs. Peavy was known for his excellent changeup in the minor leagues, and was a fastball/changeup pitcher when he first arrived in San Diego. Now, he only mixes those in to get a timing advantage on hitters, but it's still a great pitch with excellent sink. Peavy's fourth pitch is a curveball, again a pitch he'll vary the speed on. 7/29/08 CSJ

Trevor Hoffman, RHP, closer
|
| |
Hoffman owns a sinking changeup that misses bats. He'll paint corners with his straight fastball to set it up. Hoffman will also mix in a breaking ball when necessary. 8/14/08 CSJ

Heath Bell, RHP, reliever
|
| |
Heath Bell throws a hard fastball and a hard breaking ball. His breaking ball gets lots of downward movement, so I'll call it a curveball. He has been known to try a few changeups and has even tried a split-finger pitch, but any off-speed offering is very rare. The trading of Heath Bell is just one of the many reasons why the Mets need to can Omar Minaya. 6/20/08 CSJ

Justin Hampson, LHP, reliever
|
| |
Hampson throws a straight fastball and varies his breaking pitches. He throws a tight slider and a slower curve. Justin also throws a rare changeup, usually to RHs. 7/29/08 CSJ

Bryan Corey, RHP, reliever
|
| |
Corey has been kicking around minor league baseball since 1995. He works a fastball and changeup from a 3/4 arm slot. His slider is extremely hard and tight, almost like a cutter. 6/20/08 CSJ

Josh Banks, RHP, starter
|
| |
Banks claims to throw eight pitches. After dissecting his 6/19 start against the Yankees, I was able to confirm five different pitches. He starts everything with his fastball/cutter combination. His fastball can tail and sink some, and he uses his cutter on his glove side of the plate to both LHs and RHs. Banks also throws many split-finger pitches. The splitter will sometimes dive, sometimes hang, and sometimes just sail like a changuep. The Florida International product drops in big curveballs for his breaking pitch. He is known for throwing knuckleballs, and I believe I saw three or four of them in the 6/19 outing. 6/23/08 CSJ

Cha Seung Baek, RHP, starter
|
| |
Cha Seung Baek, a Korean born righthander, throws the four standard pitches. His fastball sits around 90mph, fairly straight. However, he mixes in a lot of junk. He has a short slider in the mid-80s that he likes to throw inside on LHs. A sinking change, and a looping curveball round out his repertoire. Baek can handle emergency starts, or long relief. 5/22/08 CSJ

Carlos Guevara, RHP, reliever
|
| |
"Che" is a junkballing righthander. He throws a straight fastball in the upper-80s to go with a loopy slider and dropping changeup. His changeup really dives at times, while his slider seems like a hanger. 7/29/08 CSJ

|
Cla Meredith, RHP, reliever
|
| |
Meredith throws with a long sweeping sidearm motion. His fastball moves a ton, and is clocked in the mid-80s. He mixes in sliders that can rise towards his glove-side, and a changeup that sinks arm-side. 7/29/08 CSJ
*fastball(84-87), slider(75-77), changeup(73-77)

Chris Young, RHP, starter
|
| |
Chris Young is tall and throws lots of fastballs. In fact, he throws a ridiculous amount of fastballs while very rarely breaking 90mph. Then he occasionally will throw some sliders that seem to get average movement. Young shows a straight changeup at times and will also throw a couple slow curveballs per game. Chris Young was also the first male athlete to win the Ivy League Rookie of the Year Award in two different sports. 8/14/08 CSJ

|
Clay Hensley, RHP, starter/reliever
|
| |
Hensley is known as a sinkerballer, throwing a moving high-80s 2-seamer to try and get groundballs. He throws a tight slider and standard changeup. As a starter he has shown a curveball as well, but Hensley seems destined to be a reliever due to the fact that he loses velocity as his games go on. 8/14/08 CSJ
