Kyle Lohse, RHP, starter
| |
Lohse throws the four standard pitches and gets standard results. However, his stuff has always looked good with solid velocity and movement. His fastball sits in the low-90s and can hit 95mph. He likes to backdoor his curveball to LHs and throw his slider away to RHs. Lohse's changeup may be his best pitch, getting decent sink and deception. 7/1/08 CSJ

Ron Villone, LHP, reliever
| |
Villone is a fastball/slider/change guy. His slider is a fairly hard pitch that he throws at RHs ankles. He'll try to baby a changeup sometimes, which the batters must be able to pick up on. Watch for the funny head-jerk thing he does after he releases some of his fastballs. 7/1/08 CSJ
*fastball(90-92), slider(82-87), changeup(84)

Mark Mulder, LHP, starter/reliever
| |
Mulder throws a moving fastball and big curve. He offers a 'slutter' pitch that I call a cutter. Fox throws a straight changeup and used to offer a split-finger pitch. Coming back from injury, again, it remains to be seen what he'll actually be able to throw. 7/1/08 CSJ
*fastball(89-92), curve(74-76), changeup(84-85)

Brad Thompson, RHP, reliever
| |
Thompson throws a moving fastball, a curveball, and a moving changeup. His fastball barelly touches 90mph, but it does move a ton. He mixes in moving changeups that are only 5-8mph slower than the fastball. Thompson's breaking ball is a hard curveball. 7/2/08 CSJ
*fastball(87-91), changeup(80-83), curve(75-81)

Todd Wellemeyer, RHP, starter
| |
Wellemeyer throws a moving fastball, slider, and changeup. His slider can vary from a tight breaker to a slighty more sweeping pitch. He also mixes in soft changeups to LHs. 7/2/08 CSJ
*fastball(93-96), slider(82-88), changeup(85-88)

Kyle McClellan, RHP, reliever
| |
Kyle McClellan is a TJ survivor and quickly rose through the minor leagues as a reliever after coming back from the surgery. His fastball is a heavy low-90s pitch and he uses a biting 12-6 curveball. Kyle breaks off many tight "slutter" pitches, a pitch that could be called a cutter or a slider. Lastly, he deals a straight changeup to LHs. 7/3/08 CSJ
*fastball(92-94), slider(89-91), curve(76-78), changeup(86)

Chris Perez, RHP, reliever
| |
Future closer, Chris Perez, throws a very hard fastball and sharp slider. He has been closing games since his college days at Miami. 7/3/08 CSJ
*fastball(95-96), slider(84-86)

Russ Springer, RHP, reliever
| |
Springer has a good fastball that bores in on RHs, however, his cutter is his best pitch. It breaks short and hard in the 80s. Then Springer will throw his 12-6 curveball away. In the past Springer has shown a rare changeup, but I haven't seen one yet in 2008. 7/3/08 CSJ
*fastball(90-93), curve(76-79), cutter(85)

Joel Pineiro, RHP, starter
| |
Joel Pineiro started his career hot, pitching well for three straight seasons in Seattle. Now, Pineiro has trouble getting outs of any kind. He deals a very hittable fastball around 90mph. His changeup is very straight and doesn't vary enough in velocity from his fastball. Pineiro gets by with two decent breaking balls though. His curveball is big and bites hard. He also throws a very tight slider that he can get in on LHs fists. Pineiro also pitched at Edison College. 7/3/08 CSJ
*fastball(88-93), sliders(84-89), changeup(83-87), curve(78-81)
Mitchell Boggs, RHP, starter
| |
Mitch throws a fastball, curve, and changeup. His fastball can sink or cut, depending on which side of the plate he's going with it. To his arm side, his ball sinks and tails. To his glove side, his fastball cuts. Boggs throws a curve for his breaking ball. It's a standard 12-6 pitch. Lastly, Boggs has trouble commanding his changeup, it often sails up and away towards his arm side. 7/25/08 CSJ
*fastball(89-96), curve(74-78), changeup(80-84)
Randy Flores, LHP, reliever
| |
Randy throws two different breaking pitches, which is rare for a situational lefty. His slider is standard, while his curveball is a big breaker in the low-70s. Randy's fastball is straight with average velocity and he has shown a changeup at times. 7/30/08 CSJ
*fastball(86-90), slider(80-82), curve(76), changeup
Jason Isringhausen, RHP, closer
| |
Isringhausen is a fastball/cutter pitcher. He likes to work his fastball away to LH and then bust his cutter inside. He'll also use his cutter away to RH, or even try to backdoor it. He has fairly good control and will also drop his big curveball to try and get Ks. Lastly, Jason attempts a rare changeup. 7/30/08 CSJ
*fastball(91-93), cutter(86-88), curve(78-79), changeup

Ryan Franklin, RHP, reliever
| |
Franklin has always experimented with different pitches and still uses a bunch of them. His steroid aided fastball touches 95mph at times, but it's his breaking pitches that make him successful. He throws a curveball for strikes early in counts, then uses a cutter inside on LHs. To RHs, Franklin likes to use a slider away. I suspect all of his off-speed pitches are splitters, and he has abandoned his changeup. 7/3/08 CSJ
*fastball(90-93), curve(75-79), slider(85-87), cutter(90-92), splitter(84-87)

Kelvin Jimenez, RHP, reliever
| |
Jimenez is a fringe major leaguer, a little short on stuff, but has worked his way up the organizational ladder. His fastball sits in the low-90s, flying extremely straight. Jimenez' changeup may be thrown with some sort of split-finger grip, and he uses it often. Kelvin's third pitch is a slider. 8/12/08 CSJ
*fastball(91-94), changeup(80-83), slider(84-85)
