Luis Ayala, RHP, bullpen
| |
Ayala makes a living off his sinking fastball. He won't rack up many K's, but he can induce weak balls in play with his moving fastball. His slider has good bite down in the zone and floats when he leaves it up. His change tends to tail back across the plate, similarly to the fastball. 4/16/08 CSJ

Joel Hanrahan, RHP, closer
| |
Hanrahan is a big man, and throws hard. He has a low-mid 90s fastball that flies very straight. Joel mixes in sliders and a soft changeup to go with it. 4/16/08 CSJ
*fastball(92-96), slider(82-88), changeup(83-85)

Odalis Perez, LHP, starter
| |
Odalis throws a straight fastball in the upper 80s and a cutter in the mid-80s. He'll try and throw the cutter to either side of the plate, even backdooring it to RH hitters. It can get subtle movement, just enough to turn a good swing into a weak out. His changeup is only a few MPH slower than his fastball, making it an awful pitch. His breaking ball is a curve that sits in mid to upper 70s. 4/16/08 CSJ

Saul Rivera, RHP, reliever
| |
Saul has a variety of pitches. He throws 2-seam fastballs and a cutter, both in the upper 80s. His cutter is subtle and he'll use to LHs and RHs. His 2-seam fastball runs toward his arm-side. Saul has a decent slider that he'll throw in the low 80s, usually away to RH hitters. A sinking changeup rounds out his repertoire. 5/11/08 CSJ

Shawn Hill, RHP, starter
| |
Hill has some good stuff. He throws a 2-seam fastball that gets a ton of movement. When he's spotting this pitch, and mixing in his curveball, he is usually successful. Hill's off-speed pitch is a sinking changeup with similar movement to his fastball, usually thrown away to LHs. In '08 I have noticed Hill throwing a very tight slider to mix things up. It has a velocity close to his fastball, which should help keep hitters guessing. 5/12/08 CSJ

John Lannan, LHP, starter
| |
Lannan is your run of the mill soft tossing lefty. His fastball sits between 85-87 with little movement. He'll mix in many breaking balls and changeups to try and get outs. The former Siena Saint has a slow curve that he'll often try to backdoor LHs with. He'll do the same with his slider, a pitch he seems to have added in 2008. Lastly, Lannan's changeup is straight and varies by only a few MPH from his fastball. 5/14/08 CSJ

Tim Redding, RHP, starter
| |
Redding survives by mixing his pitches well. He has an average fastball that he tries to spot on the corners. Then he mixes in tight sliders to both sides of the plate, using it much like a cutter inside on LHs. Redding owns a standard curveball and a straight changeup. I have noticed a split-finger pitch from Redding in 2008. He'll try to use it as a strikeout pitch once or twice a game. T-Red is also the nephew of Trixie Norton of The Honeymooners. 5/15/08 CSJ
*fastball(87-93), slider(82-87), curve(74-80), change(79-84)

Chris Schroder, RHP, reliever
| |
Schroder whips the ball to the plate. His fastball can get some decent movement, while his slider is a sweeping pitch. 5/27/08 CSJ
*fastball(86-88), slider(75)

Steven Shell, RHP, reliever
| |
Shell throws from a low 3/4 arm angle, giving batters a strange view of his pitches. His fastball is only 90mph, but appears to rise out of his low release point. He drops in big, sweeping curveballs and will try a split-finger pitch away to LHs. 8/14/08 CSJ
*fastball(88-91), curve(75-77), splitter(82-83)
Jason Bergmann, RHP, starter
| |
The oft-injured Bergmann has a decent sinking fastball and two different breaking balls. He prefers his slider to the curve, but will throw both pitches to the outside corner almost exclusively. In fact, he'll throw all his pitches to the outside corner, and very rarely come inside intentionally. Bergmann does own a changeup too, but rarely shows it. 5/15/08 CSJ
*fastball(86-92), slider(82-87), curve(74-78), change(82-86)

Jesus Colome, RHP, reliever
| |
Colome is a fastball/slider/changeup pitcher. His fastball has decent velocity, but his slider can be very weak, just spinning up to the plate. He'll also throw a hard moving changeup. 8/14/08 CSJ
*fastball(92-97), slider(81-90)
Charlie Manning, LHP, reliever
| |
Unlike his football throwing namesakes, Manning is lefthanded and throws a sweeping slider. Charlie mixes his fastballs, throwing a tailing 2-seamer and a cutter. He'll use the cutter to all sides of the plate, backdooring RHs and breaking it away from LHs. I have not seen a changeup from Manning yet. 8/14/08 CSJ
*fastball(89-90), cutter(86-88), slider(76-82)
Collin Balester, RHP, starter
| |
Balester throws an over-the-top fastball to go with a 12-6 curve and straight changeup. Balester will mix in tons of his secondary pitches, never really counting on his fastball to get the job done. 8/15/08 CSJ
*fastball(90-94), curve(74-78), changeup(81-86)

Garrett Mock, RHP, reliever
| |
Mock has a naturally cutting fastball and changeup. He has also shown a 12-6 curveball. Wood played baseball at the University of Houston. 8/15/08 CSJ
*fastball(91-93), changeup(80-82), curve(79)

Ray King, LHP, reliever
| |
Despite looking like the left handed body double of Antonio Alfonseca, Ray King has remained a more valuable and steady reliever than Ol' Six Finger. The portly veteran, Ray King, is a standard fastball/slider reliever. He throws lots of tight sliders down in the zone, mixed with a decent straight fastball. He has shown a changeup to RHs, but those are extremely rare. 4/16/08 CSJ

Michael O'Connor, LHP, reliever
| |
O'Connor, a George Washington University product, is the Nats local hero. Unfortunately, his stuff doesn't project all that well in the major leagues. He has a fairly straight over-the-top fastball and a big 12-6 curve. He uses a straight changeup as his off-speed pitch. It looks like he has decent command, even though he uses an awkward throwing motion. 5/11/08 CSJ
