Josh Beckett, RHP, starter
| |
Beckett throws a fastball, curveball, changeup, and a few cutters. He'll mix up his fastball some, throwing running 2-seamers to go with his 4-seam. Beckett's curve is a hard 12-6 pitch and his changeup can get good sink in the upper-80s. Josh has gone back and forth between using his cutter and not using it. He tends to throw it exclusively inside on LHs, but will go months without breaking it out. 7/17/08 CSJ

Jon Lester, LHP, starter
| |
Lester, the cancer surviving lefthander from Tacoma, already owns a no-hitter. He deals a low-mid 90s fastball and a high-80s cutter. His fastball gets some tail and sink, but it's the velocity from the left side that makes it tough to hit. His second pitch is his cutter, a very tight breaking ball that he deals inside on RHs and sometimes away from LHs. Lester throws a big 'Uncle Charlie' curveball that can miss bats. His fourth pitch is a changeup that he doesn't command very well. 5/20/08 CSJ
*fastball(89-96), cutter(85-91), curve(75-80), changeup(82-85)

Hideki Okajima, LHP, reliever
| |
Okajima throws a straight over-the-top fastball that is surprizingly effective. His splitter may be his best pitch, getting amazing deception and some drop. His breaking ball is a curve. He has struggled some in 2008, and hitters may have finally figured out his fastball is very hittable. 7/13/08 CSJ
*fastball(86-89), splitter(82-84), curve(74-78)

Javier Lopez, LHP, reliever
| |
Lopez is a sidearming lefthander, and his gimmick delivery can produce results. He primarily uses a fastball and slider, while showing a changeup. 7/29/08 CSJ
*fastball(81-89), slider(70-77), changeup(81)

Jonathan Papelbon, RHP, closer
| |
Papelbon has dominant stuff. He has an explosive fastball, a diving splitter, and a slider. He reportedly calls his breaking pitch a 'slutter'. His warmup theatrics, which drag Fenway into a fervor, cannot be beat. 7/24/08 CSJ
*fastball(94-98), splitter(90), slider(86-87)

Manny Delcarmen, RHP, reliever
| |
Delcarmen is a hard thrower. He brings a 95mph fastball with an overhand curve. He also shows a straight change. Manny is also a Boston native. 7/24/08 CSJ
*fastball(93-99), curve(75-82), changeup(81-84)

Tim Wakefield, RHP, starter
| |
Wakefield is a knuckleballer, one of the few remaining in the major leagues. He also has a fastball that sinks and a slow curveball. Tim probably misses having Dougie behind the plate these days, but his stuff remains the same as it's been for years. 7/24/08 CSJ
*knuckleball(59-67), fastball(71-75), curveball(55-58)

Bartolo Colon, RHP, starter
| |
Colon is far from his days when his fastball was intimidating and his breaking ball would miss bats. He has returned to the majors with a mid-80s "fastball" and a weak slider. Colon is also flipping a changeup. 7/29/08 CSJ
*fastball(80-86), slider(76-80), changeup(75-78)
Mike Timlin, RHP, reliever
| |
Timlin is a veteran. He throws lots of hard stuff and comes inside often. He mixes his tailing fastball with his cutter, then offers a downward breaking slider and the occasional sinking changeup. 7/29/08 CSJ
*fastball(89-94), cutter(87-92), slider(84-85), changeup(81-86)
David Aardsma, RHP, reliever
| |
Aardsma is a fastball/slider/splitter guy. His slider is more up and down than right->left. He throws a splitter for his off-speed pitch. His career has been extremely up and down, 6.40 ERA in 2007, 2.75 so far in 2008. 7/29/08 CSJ
*fastball(89-95), splitter(85-87), slider
Justin Masterson, RHP, starter/reliever
| |
Masterson offers up a lot of movement with each pitch. His delivery is strange to say the least, but it has produced results at every level so far. He slings a low-90s fastball and a sweeping slider. I have only seen one outing of his so far, and have not seen any other pitches. 8/11/08 CSJ
*fastball(87-93), slider(78-80)
