Jose Contreras, RHP, starter
Contreras has an amazing forkball that he relies heavily on. He throws it with the widest split grip in the game. It's an unmistakable pitch that gets unpredictable movement, diving down in either direction due to the lack of spin on the ball, like a knuckler. Unfortunately for Contreras, his fastball isn't what it used to be, and his slider is absolute garbage. In order to be effective against RHs, Contreras will now lower his arm angle to throw both his fastball and hanging slider. Lastly, Contreras will throw a straight changeup away to LHs. 4/28/08 CSJ

Octavio Dotel, RHP, reliever
Continually battling back from his elbow injury, Dotel is having command issues and trouble returning the dominant repertoire he had with the Astros. Octo's fastball gets amazing natural cut, which makes him difficult to hit. Then he mixes in breaking balls that he can vary velocities on. 4/28/08 CSJ

Gavin Floyd, RHP, starter
A complete Phillies bust, Floyd is attempting to make an impact with the White Sox. His stuff looks improved from his early days in Philly, and he just might have a chance. His fastball bores in on RHs around 90mph. He throws a tight slider that has a tendency to back up, so much so that at times is can look like a splitter or changeup. Floyd throws a curveball that looks like a good pitch, but difficult to command. Lastly, he throws a changeup to LHs on occasion. 4/28/08 CSJ

Bobby Jenks, RHP, closer
Jenks can bring that southside heat. He has a fastball that seems to naturally cut on him, and he can bring it in the mid-90s. Jenks' slider is a hard pitch in the upper-80s to 90mph. It can appear like a cutter at times. His curveball breaks hard with the velocity of most pitchers' sliders. Lastly, Jenks will try a changeup to a LH every now and then. Physically, Jenks has really short legs, and an abnormally long torso. 4/28/08 CSJ

Scott Linebrink, RHP, reliever
Linebrink has three standard pitches, plus his strange splitter. The splitter seems to pop up out of his hand, floating and breaking armside. This can make it appear to be a curveball at times, and/or dance strangely towards the plate. His fastball is extremely straight at 92mph, but hitters have a tough time getting around on it. His slider is in the upper-70s to low-80s, and isn't nearly as sharp as it used to be. Linebrink's changeup sinks some but it fairly straight. 4/28/08 CSJ

Boone Logan, LHP, reliever
Boone has the standard lefty reliever repertoire of fastball/slider/changeup. His fastball velocity is average, but he doesn't need it to be great. To LHs he will consistently pepper the outside corner with his slider. To RHs, he relies more on his changeup. Logan is basically Scott Schoeneweis, which doesn't bode well for him. 4/28/08 CSJ

Mike MacDougal, RHP, reliever
MacDougal has a strong arm, and jerky delivery. He throws lots of sliders to all hitters. His fastball can get amazing sink at times, or seem to rise on a hitter when he gets it up in the zone. MacDougal will also mix in a few changeups. 4/29/08 CSJ

Nick Masset, RHP, reliever
Nick Masset is a middle reliever. He has good velocity on his fastball, in the low-90s, and mixes in two different breaking pitchers. The slider is a short and tight breaker in the mid-upper 80s. Masset's curve is his favorite second offering, though it doesn't look like a very good pitch. It tends to just roll over softly to home plate. 4/28/08 CSJ

Matt Thornton, LHP, reliever
Thornton throws hard for a lefthander. He owns a 95mph fastball that can miss bats. His slider is a good pitch that he'll use almost always to the glove side of the plate, i.e. inside on RHs and away from LHs. Thornton's offspeed pitch is a split-finger offering that looks mostly like a hard changeup. 4/28/08 CSJ

Javier Vazquez, RHP, starter
Vazquez varies his breaking balls well, throwing his curveball anywhere between an ephus-like 60mph to 76mph. His slider gets fairly tight break at times, especially when he tries to bury it inside on LHs. Vazquez' changeup used to be his best pitch in Montreal, then he seemed to have lost command of it with the Yankees, and now it's back with the White Sox. Vazquez has also attempted splitters at different times in his career. Lastly, Javier's fastball still has good movement and low-90s velocity. 4/28/08 CSJ
