Jeremy Affeldt, LHP, reliever
|
| |
Affeldt is still a hard thrower with 90+ heat from the left side. However, he seems to have lowered his arm slot to get some movement on his fastball. He mixes in an overhand curveball for his breaking pitch. When facing RHs, Affeldt will mix in occasional straight changeups. In the past he has tried throwing a tight cutter/slider pitch, but has scrapped that in recent years. Affeldt arrived in the majors with a big arm and big expectations with the Royals. Instead he has made himself into a serviceable setup man. 5/11/08 CSJ

David Weathers, RHP, reliever
|
| |
Weathers is a fastball/slider pitcher. His fastball seems to drop in velocity every season, now flying in the upper-80s. It gets decent movement however, including some natural cut. Weathers mixes in many tight sliders as his out pitch. Weathers usually relies on these two pitches only, but will mix in some changeups to LHs. 5/11/08 CSJ

Johnny Cueto, RHP, starter
|
| |
Cueto can bring some heat. He has a moving fastball that is thrown anywhere between 90-95mph. He has excellent command of it as well, showing the ability to hit his target and not issue walks. Johnny throws a slider and a changeup as well, and he'll use these two pitches quite often. He'll throw the slider to either side of the plate, backdooring LHs, getting RHs to chase, or busting LHs inside. Cueto's changeup gets good sink when thrown well. However, he has a tendency to pull his changeup to his glove side, making it float inside to LHs, very dangerous. Cueto has shown dominant stuff at the start of his career, and with his command he should be successful. 5/11/08 CSJ

Bill Bray, LHP, reliever
|
| |
Bray is a lefty specialist. He throws a hard fastball around 90mph out of a funky motion. His second pitch is a very tight slider that doesn't seem to change planes much. I have never seen a changeup from Bray. 5/11/08 CSJ

Levi Jared Burton, RHP, reliever
|
| |
Burton is a cutter pitcher. He throws a low-90s fastball that appears to get tons of natural cut. This movement makes it a tough pitch to hit. Burton's problem is that his other offerings (slider, changeup) are very similar in speed to his cutting fastball. His slider is a mid-80s pitch that can break hard at times, and other times backup. Burton's changeup can get some serious sink, but is also a high velocity pitch. Burton was a rule 5 draftee that the Reds stole from Oakland. 5/11/08 CSJ

Bronson Arroyo, RHP, starter
|
| |
Arroyo is not afraid to throw a changeup or curveball on the first pitch of the game, or for the first pitch of every inning. He mixes all kinds of junk together and will throw anything at any time from any arm angle. His standard repertoire includes a fairly straight fastball and a big overhand curve. He has a soft changeup that gets some sink. However, Arroyo's main weapon is his various arm angles. He'll drop his arm slot and sweep curveballs across the zone or run fastballs away from LHs. He'll vary the breaking ball speed anywhere in the 70s. Arroyo has a cutter too. He'll use the cutter inside to LH and away from RH. 5/11/08 CSJ

Francisco Cordero, RHP, closer
|
| |
Co-Co Cordero seems to stick with a simple plan. When facing LHs, he'll mix his hard fastball with a sinking changeup. When facing RHs, he'll mix the fastball with an excellent biting slider. He won't give in to hitters, but rather walk them than throw a hittable pitch. 5/11/08 CSJ

Matt Belisle, RHP, starter/reliever
|
| |
Belisle throws a low-90s running fastball and a curveball. His curveball will vary, usually sitting in the low-mid 70s. Belisle throws a cutter in the mid-upper 80s that he goes inside to LHs with. Belisle will throw a straight changeup that doesn't vary much from the velocity of his fastball. Matt also mixes in sliders, usually to RHs. 6/16/08 CSJ

Mike Lincoln, RHP, reliever
|
| |
2008 is Lincoln's first year playing baseball games since 2004. He has recovered from two TJ surgeries in the last four years. Lincoln brings back the same good curveball as his best pitch. He mixes in straight fastballs and a cut version inside to LHs. Lincoln will also show a changeup as his fourth pitch. 6/16/08 CSJ

Edinson Volquez, RHP, starter
|
| |
Edinson Volquez has burst onto the scene in '08. He has piled up Ks by using his excellent fastball/changeup combo. His strategy is simple: throw the fastball inside to get ahead, then toss moving changeups away to finish hitters off. Edinson will deviate from this strategy, but not very often. He'll attack most hitters with this basic plan. Both Volquez' fastball and changeup will cut some when thrown to his glove side. He also throws two similar looking breaking balls. His curveball is in the upper-70s and he'll usually try to backdoor LHs with it. His slider is a low-80s pitch that he'll throw away from RHs. 7/21/08 CSJ

|
Gary Majewski, RHP, reliever
|
| |
Despite shoulder problems, Majewski still has decent velocity on his fastball, sitting in the low-90s. Gary will mix in a tight slider and has shown a changeup. 7/21/08 CSJ

Daryl Thompson, RHP, starter
|
| |
"Big D" is a hard thrower and isn't afraid to pound the strikezone. Thompson predominately throws 2-seam and 4-seam fastballs. His secondary offerings are a standard slider and a sinking changeup that looks like a plus pitch. Thompson also mixes in a few big curveballs. 7/30/08 CSJ

|
Josh Fogg, RHP, starter
|
| |
Fogg throws a moving fastball, tailing and running at times, but velocity never touches 90mph. He throws many cutters around the mid-80s to both LHs and RHs. He'll even backdoor LHs with it and frontdoor RHs. Fogg also mixes in lots of changeups to both LHs and RHs. Fogg's curveball is anywhere between 75-81mph, often resembling more of a slider. 8/8/08 CSJ
